About Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Vadtal

Located in the village of Vadtal is the Shri Swaminarayan Temple. The village is very close to Nadiad at a distance of 14 kms. Built in the year 1824 this temple is the headquarter of the Shri laxminarayan Dev Gadi. Such has been the influence of the temple that the place is also known as Vadtal Swaminarayan.

The temple is a beautiful structure that fills one’s senses at the very sight of it. The lotus shaped temple is pure architectural brilliance and there are nine domes in the inner temple. The pillars of the temple are made of wood and the colourful wood carvings on these pillars are a sight to behold. Shri Brahmanand Swami played an instrumental part in the building of the temple as it was constructed under his supervision.

The Swaminarayan Temple in Vadtal, Gujarat is home to a number of deities. The temple has been divided into three main shrines with each shrine being dedicated to particular deities. The central shrine of the temple is dedicated to Lakshmi Narayan and Ranchod Raiji. Then there is a shrine dedicated to Radha Krishna and Lord Swaminarayan on the right hand side. To the left of the central shrine are the deities of Vasude, Dharma and Bhakti.

History of Shri Swaminarayan Temple

The Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Vadtal stands because of the gesture of Lord Swaminarayan. When the devotees from Vadtal came to him on the occasion of Nirjala Ekadshi, on the twelfth day they made a request to Lord Swaminarayan to construct a temple devoted to Shri Krishna in Vadtal. The Lord wasted no time and ordered his disciple Shri Brahmanand Swami to work towards completing the wish of the devotees. The disciple got engaged in the task and oversaw the entire supervision of the temple. It took 15 months to build this beautiful temple. The idols in the central shrine were installed by Lord Swaminarayan himself and it was done with great celebration and chanting of hymns.

Historical Facts

The temple has some history attached with the freedom movement as well. During pre-independence it became a regular platform for speeches for the Independence Movement. One of the epic moments was when Mahatma Gandhi delivered a speech in favor of non-cooperationfrom the premises of the temple in January 1921. Sardar Vallabhai Patel also used to visit the temple frequently with his father.
